Koštajnica (also spelt Kostanjica) is a small, tranquil settlement strung along the inner Bay of Kotor between Risan and the Verige narrows, on the slopes facing Perast. Here the dramatic mountains plunge straight toward the still, dark waters of Europe's southernmost fjord-like bay, and the village looks directly across to Perast's twin islets, Our Lady of the Rocks and St George. There is little to do in the conventional sense, and that is the point: Koštajnica is for travellers seeking peace, solitude and the quiet rhythm of a genuine bayside community rather than resorts, bars or crowds. Days here are simple and unhurried. The shoreline offers pristine, uncrowded swimming spots where the water is clean and deep right off the rocks and small pebble inlets, and local fishermen still bring in the catch that turns up as fresh seafood on the table. A scattering of family-run guesthouses and waterfront homes provide warm, authentic Montenegrin hospitality, the kind where hosts share homemade rakija and point you to the best place to swim. The views across to Perast and out over the islands are especially lovely in the soft light of early morning and evening. What makes Koštajnica work so well is its position. It is genuinely peaceful yet only minutes from the bay's headline sights: Perast lies just across the water and a short drive around the shore, Risan with its Roman mosaics is close by to the west, and the old town of Kotor is around 20 to 25 minutes away by car. Herceg Novi is a comparable drive in the other direction, and Tivat airport roughly 30 to 35 minutes, so arrival and day trips are easy. Choose Koštajnica when you want a restful, scenic base from which to explore the inner bay while returning each evening to stillness and quiet water.
