Montenegro has a tradition of art that goes back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by archaeological finds of paintings of prehistoric man in Lipci near Risno dating from the 8th century BC. The drawing represents deer hunting and also contains the rising sun symbol and others. The site of Crvena Stijena in Petrovići is about 30 km from Nikšić and is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe. Remains from the Middle Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age were found here, which are of great importance. Numerous medieval fortresses in Montenegro are an art form in themselves. They reflect Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque building styles. The National Museum in Cetinje includes: Museum of King Nikola, Museum of Peter II Petrović Njegoš, Njegoš's birthplace, Njegoš's mausoleum on Lovćen, Vladika Danilo's Mausoleum on Orlovo Krš, Art Museum together with Dado Đurić Gallery of Contemporary Art, Ethnographic Museum and the newly opened Archaeological Museum and Lapidarium. The National Museum preserves collections of weapons, medals, flags, coats of arms, seals, photographs, as well as archaeological, numismatic, ethnographic and applied art collections.
