Herceg Novi is the youngest of all the old coastal towns. The city was initially called Sveti Stefan, then - Novi, because it was really new. In the 15th century, Herceg Stjepan Vukšic added Novi his title to the name, after which, to this day, this famous summer resort and cultural address is called Herceg Novi. Conquered and destroyed by the Turks (1482, 1493, 1508), it was also in the hands of the Spaniards (1538). Already in 1539, the admiral of the Turkish war fleet, Hajrudin Barbarossa, conquered it again. From 1687 it was under the rule of the Republic of Venice, until its collapse in 1797. Then Herceg Novi was ruled by the Austrians (1797-1806), the Russians (until 1807), the French (until 1814), for a short time, from 1813, the Government of Boka Kotorska and Montenegro, and again the Austrians - for a long time, until 1918. During the First and Second World Wars, Herceg Novi was under Italian and German rule. occupation.

Built on a cascading terrain, the City of Greens nestles like an amphitheater, with a privileged view of the open sea and even two opposite peninsulas, Luštica and Prevlaka. Between these peninsulas, there are events every day: sailors set sail to compete in sailing, fishermen to offer their catch at the market the next morning, tourist boats flock to the most famous picnic spots - Žanjice, Mamula, Blue Cave...

The city port is called Škver, which means Shipyard, because it used to be located there. To the left and right, the promenade stretches from Igalo to Meljin (5 km). Along the longest coastal promenade, the largest outdoor exhibition of exotic plants sprouts! Rare, unusual plants from all continents, various palm trees, cacti, bananas, magnolias, shrub decorations, mimosas, wild oranges, camellias, pittospores, oleanders, eucalyptus...

Curiously, Herceg Novi has two main squares! Belavista Square (beautiful view!) is located in the Old Town, and it is easy to get to: as soon as you walk from the main square of Nikola Đurkovica (formerly Salt Square) through the symbol of Herceg Novi - the Clock Tower. Belavista Square is dominated by the Orthodox Church of St. Archangel Michael, unique in its stone iconostasis. Old Town Square is a real architectural medallion! Everything is there, in a nutshell: a church in the Byzantine style with elements of the Orient, the city Archives, the Library, Radio Herceg Novi, an art gallery, a pharmacy, cafeterias, private buildings. Down the stairs you can reach the Catholic Church of St. Jerome (with a rich treasury) and St. Leopold Mandić (from Novljanin). On the same cascade plane is the Music School. And palm trees, and vegetation! In the street-staircase of Mark Car, the writer, there is a kind of dinosaur tree, Ginko biloba.

Herceg Novi is also known as the City of Writers. In the idyllic silence of Novi, Aleksa Šantic, Simo Matavulj, Ivo Andrić (Andrić's house is now the Writers' Club; in its immediate vicinity is the Native Museum), Mihailo Lalić, Stevan Raicković, Dušan Kostić, Zuko Džumhur... Many contemporary writers can be found in the city's Knjižara So, on the main square. The main street, Njegoševa street, leads from Trg all the way to Igal. Exclusive boutiques, City Tavern, City Park, Main Post Office, tourist agencies, churches... - everything is located in Njegoševa.

In the church of St. Ascension of Christ, in the former suburb of Toplo, where Peter II was once taught to read. The main street is crossed by numerous staircases. The city is also known for those streets-stairs. It was the stairs that gave rise to the name of the most famous summer festival. The Music Scale Festival (held every July at the Kanli Tower) is one of the brands of the city of Herceg Novi. Not only because of the rich monastery treasury and library, but also because of its extraordinary beauty, spiritual and cultural significance. The monastery complex is surrounded by lush Mediterranean vegetation, on one of the most beautiful viewpoints. The complex consists of three churches, Big (18th century) and Small (11th century) - dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and the church of St. Sava Srpski (13th century).

You should definitely take a walk to the former Upper Town, to the monumental fortress Španjola. Its dimensions are impressive! If you like hiking, the Mountain House - Subra is at your service. The Forte mare fortress, on the other hand, is visible from all positions and, as its name suggests, rises above the coast itself, vertically above the Gradska plaža and the harbor (Škvera). In the immediate vicinity there is the Kusturica cineplex-cinema "Aurora", the house of the painter Voj Stanica, the pool of the water polo club "Jadran" and good restaurants, of course.

The difference between these two centers is that Kotor is dominated by stone palaces (mostly from the Baroque era), while Herceg Novi is dominated by villas.
