The inner (Kotor-Risan) part of the Bay of Boka Kotorska (Montenegro) is unpredictable to such an extent due to the winding coastal lines - that the main road turns almost 90 degrees in some places. Such is the case in Kotor, Ljuto, conditionally in Risno, and especially in Morinje. Morinj is located on the 30th kilometer from Kotor towards Herceg Novi, deep in the fjord, at the foot of the high Risa side, a vertical mountain range, as well as at the bottom of the dominant mountain Sniježnica and Jeremija's hill. Unlike in the summer, when Morinj is all bathed in the sun, in the winter there are days when there is no sun here at all, or there is very little of it.

Nevertheless, Morinj is the largest settlement on the west coast of the Bay of Kotor-Risan, and a well-known tourist spot. Many sailors and sea captains come from here. If they had not been both warriors (in the past indeed) and patrons, they would not have been able to establish the first school in the vernacular Serbian language in Morinje at their own expense (1803). The National Library was founded here in 1843. The School building still exists today.

In fact, there is not just one Mourinho. Rather, there are Gornji and Donji, where travelers always seem to notice everything they can see from Morinje in those few minutes, which is enough for a car to pass on the highway. Morinjani are indignant. Rightfully so!

Because here we should stop. Take a break. For at least a few reasons... Morinj differs from coastal towns in that it is all on the water. Named as if it is composed of salty sea and land fresh water. This place is saturated with water to such an extent! If you go a little further from the Jadranska magistrala, first by car and then on foot, Morinj reveals its undisputed charms. Around the family restaurant of the Ćatović family, one of the few with the charisma of an autochthonous ambience - actually a complex of an old mill turned into a catering attraction, the hidden beauty of the whole Morinje is revealed.

While we are drinking bevanda, water is flowing around us, only a few dozen meters from the mouth of the sea. Summer-winter! We observe birds and marine fish of the species that can live in brackish water, semi-sweet and semi-salty. Wooden and stone bridges float over the canals and tributaries of the freshwater basin, which originates from the foot of the Sniježnica mountain. Ćatovića mills were not the only Morinjski mills. There are others, but they are not preserved. One is on the coast, a few meters from the highway and is in a dilapidated state. Next to the coast are some of the most popular camping locations on the entire Primorje.

The brackish sea water in front of Morinja favors the growth of many shellfish. There is a large farm of delicious mussels in the immediate vicinity, so the price of a portion in restaurants is lower. Touching the drinking water from the mountain is known to lower the temperature of the sea along the many local sandy beaches. Considering the increasingly hot summers, the sea temperature in Morinje is only a few degrees lower than the beaches in neighboring Risno. When the sea water temperature in Risno is 26°C, in Morinje it is a more than comfortable 24°C.

Gornji Morinj, just a few tens of minutes' walk away, is a story in itself. Without intense springs, but with a better view of Perast and the islands there, Gornji Morinj is closer to an important pilgrimage route. Every August 8, on the day of St. On Fridays, a pilgrimage was made here - a few years ago exclusively on foot - to the church of St. Fridays at Bunovići. The village is deserted during the winter, a few hours' walk from Morinje, with a source of drinking water, and recently also with a nunnery. {googlemap}
