Kumbor is a coastal town on the Herceg-Novi Riviera, only 6 km from the city, or less than 10 minutes by car. The name Kumbor comes from the Italian word conborgo, meaning suburb. Although in the aforementioned 10-minute drive from Kumbor to Herceg Novi you also pass through Zelenika and Meljine, all these places have architecturally merged with the gravitating Herceg Novi to such an extent over time - that clear boundaries between the settlements can no longer be seen. In Venetian documents from 1758, Kumbor is mentioned under the name Combur. In the decades after us, Kumbor was recognized by the JRM (Yugoslav Navy, part of the JNA, Yugoslav People's Army) military complex, and by the fact that this military complex physically divided the place into two parts, occupying the central and most beautiful coastal part, and a park full of Mediterranean vegetation, rare eucalyptus, coastal conifers and palm trees.

Isolated by a fence and guarded by guards, the central part of Kumbor, from the time of the Austro-Hungarian rule, was until recently one of the rare coastal positions where tourists did not bathe, unless they were continental soldiers, reassigned to the military post - Kumbor. Local fishermen, sick of the traditional blue and white stripes on sailors' T-shirts, always somehow added small things from the boat, cigarettes, razors, soaps...

In the Military Complex, there is still a Catholic church whose interior was painted by the most talented painter from the Gulf Baroque era, Tripo Kokolja from Perašta. Little is known about this data. The frescoes are in very poor condition. The following places of worship are located in Kumbor: Church of the Shroud of St. The Virgin, which in the 18th century built by Marko Milinović; the iconostasis is the work of Zograf Nikola Aspioti. Church of St. Sunday, once Orthodox, which the Venetians in the 18th century assigned to Roman Catholics. Church of St. Nikola, built in 1862. Church of St. Vasilija Ostroški, consecrated in 1919, badly damaged in the earthquake of April 15, 1979, restored today.

In the past years, Kumbor became a large construction site. In an area that gravitates to one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the Gulf, enterprising businessmen have built, or are building, complexes of residential buildings. Each of them has a view of that part of the Bay of Boka Kotorska (Montenegro), actually the Kumbor Strait, through which, geologists claim, the glacial river from the Kotor and Risan sides once passed, thus making a breakthrough through today's narrowest gulf strait, the Kumbor Strait. It was 10,000 years ago, in the younger Neolithic, when the total level of the world's seas, due to the last Ice Age, was lower by about 100 meters. And when the entire Boka Kotorska was actually land! Today, Kumbor is one of those towns along the Herceg Novi Riviera, from where you can quickly reach all the popular picnic spots (Rosa, Žanjica, Mirišta, Blue Caves, Gospa od Škrpjela, Kotor...) by tourist boats.

There is a tiny marina in Kumbor, so small that it is not for yachts, but only for old fishing boats of modest dimensions. There are always fishermen around that marina, and there are fishermen's stories. Each of the possible ones can be started with a question: “Are there any fish? And which one? What baits do you use? What are the different types of networks called? Is there still a custom according to which fishermen always feed seagulls with smaller pieces of fish?..."

From every coastal position, across the narrow Kumbor Strait, one can see large semicircular openings in the hill (Luštica, Montenegro), at sea level. During the SFRY era, they were used to hide military ships and submarines of the Yugoslav Navy. Truth be told, even today there aren't many people who could tell exactly what was in those deep trenches.
