Rozaje is a town in a very picturesque area at the source of the Ibra River. It is located in the middle of a huge green forest complex and is surrounded by mountains on three sides. Rozaje is a place located at the crossroads of roads, one towards Kosovska Mitrovica, then towards Berane and Peca. Although there are no closer and more complete data about the time of the creation of Rozaj, the scattered monuments, primarily of material culture, can serve as a basis for certain conclusions.

There are several places in the area that speak of the age of Rozaj. Many cemeteries, fortifications, settlements and folklore are also related to the era before our era. There are more such signs. However, the most characteristic is the one located in the immediate vicinity of the city, on the Brezovacki hill, known as the Illyrian settlement. At that place, you can still see the remains of walls in the shape of a rectangle, lined up in such a way that you get the impression that there were streets in that settlement, quite similar to today's. The settlement was located in the most beautiful place in the entire area, it was surrounded by forest and water, and in its immediate vicinity was Lake Brezovac. The remains of this old settlement are well preserved, but no one visits there, except for the occasional curious person who is more interested in the natural beauty than the settlement itself.

One of the old fortifications must have been in Rozaje. Turkish travel writers mention this entire area under the name Trgoviste, and that at the beginning of the 17th century. Until 1912, the official administration retained the name Trgoviste, although the name Rozaje was mentioned much earlier, since 1638. It is assumed that the name Rozaje arose after the separation of this market into a separate administrative unit - kadiluk. There are assumptions that the name Rozaje is etymologically derived by various permutations from the name of the Ruzica church, the remains of which are located on the outskirts of the city, in Suho Polje. In an effort to understand the etymology of the Rozaje river, there is an opinion that this name came from characteristic limestone wedges in the shape of horns, above which was the old fortification of Rogaje.
