Durmitor in late spring
What to expect. Snow lingers on the high ground well into June, so late spring means green valleys below and white peaks above — the season the photographs above were taken in. It also means unpredictable footing: melting snowfields, swollen streams and mud on trails that are dry by July.
What is open. The Black Lake circuit is walkable early, but the high passes and the ridge routes towards Bobotov Kuk often are not, and the Sedlo pass road can stay closed after a heavy winter. Check with the national park office in Zabljak before committing to anything above the treeline.
Why come anyway. The park is nearly empty, the meadows are at their best, and the rivers run high, which is exactly what the rafting season on the Tara needs. Bring layers: at 1,450 m the nights stay near freezing long after the coast has warmed up.
