Just above the town of Žanjic, where one of the most beautiful beaches and picnic spots on our coast is located, is the village of Zambelici. The birthplace of the famous Chilean captain Petar Zambelic is located there.

Žanjic beach Petar Zambelic was born in 1849 on the Luštica peninsula, Boka Kotorska. In 1872, he moved to the Magellanes, then still unexplored and sparsely populated. This is also shown by the census from 1885, according to which only 2,085 inhabitants live in the entire territory of Magellanes, of which 781 were foreigners. Petar Zambelic is undoubtedly one of the people who today has a significant place in the history of that part of the world. In 1894, the Chilean Navy put him in command of the reconnaissance ship Condor as a researcher of maritime routes. Three years later, by the general administration of the Chilean fleet, he was appointed master pilot of the Magellan area. In 1884, Petar Zambelic married a Chilean woman, Luisa Zuñiga, with whom he had a large family, and his many descendants still live in Magellan and throughout Chile. (Our emigration in South America - Ljubomir Antica., Zagreb 1989). Captain Petar Zambelic tragically lost his life in 1903, falling into the sea from his sailboat while scrubbing.

Today, many random passers-by, mostly shoppers and tourists who come to these parts in large numbers during the summer, stop, carried away by curiosity, near the birthplace of the famous captain. In 1952, the locals erected a plaque in that place in memory and eternal glory. The name of this great man, as well as many other people from our regions who became famous in their new homelands, is insufficiently known to the general public, which we are trying to change through this article.
