A field that kept saying no

Grbalj is the westernmost of the medieval Dukljan župe, named — says Kotor’s own street-naming handbook — after the ancient Agruvium, and its peasants rebelled against Kotor’s landlords in 1451–52 over the effects of Venetian control. Widths are to scale.

Kotor accepted Venetian suzerainty in 1420 and Grbalj was governed from the city. Two bands compress: the Ottoman-to-Venetian handover has no single clean date, and the Austrian band spans the Napoleonic years of 1805–1814, when Kotor was French.

Two hundred and forty-five people in 1948, fifty-five in 1991, one hundred and thirty-four at the 2023 census — in forty-nine households, where 2011 counted a hundred and one people in forty-two. Sixteen residents are under ten and twenty-seven are in their fifties.

Montenegrobusiness Kotor municipality, its Directorate for Development and Construction and the company Bigova Bay sign an agreement for two hotels on Cape Trašte — 478 beds in the larger — plus a number of villas.

Montenegrobusiness The investor puts the Cape Trašte project at €400 million and more than 105,000 m² of gross construction area, and reports a €6.2m contract for water, power and fibre for Donji Grbalj on a thirteen-month schedule.

The year Grbalj refused the draft

Grbalj — 1869: Vienna extends conscription under the 1868 Defence Act to men who had always borne arms and had never owed the army a day. Ivo and Jovan Rafailović lead a Grbalj uprising against Austria.
Knežlaz: the neighbouring rising in Krivošije, against the same law, runs from 7 October to a peace signed on 11 January 1870 in a Kotor village that the 2023 census records as having no residents at all. Around a thousand fighters had held off more than thirteen thousand troops. Conscription was abandoned, everyone was pardoned, and the rebels kept their weapons.
Egypt: the Suez Canal is inaugurated on 17 November, and every ship that ever passes this coast is on a different map afterwards.
Promontory, Utah — the golden spike goes in on 10 May; two months earlier Mendeleev had laid the periodic table before the Russian Chemical Society.

Brodet

The fishermen’s stew of this coast: whatever the nets gave up that morning, cooked down slowly with onion, olive oil and tomato, and eaten with bread or polenta. Almost every family in the village keeps its own boat, so the fish on the plate and the fish in the harbour are the same fish. The other standby is riblja čorba, the fish soup that comes before it.
