Romerveien — Petrovac & Paštrovići

Petrovac & Paštrovići

Romerveien

Buljarica

The riviera's last largely unbuilt bay: reedbed, farmland, forest fragments and a two-kilometre beach behind it. The round “300-hectare wetland” figure blends several overlapping boundaries — a beach protected as a natural monument, a defined bird area, a smaller wetland study focus — each with its own evidence and its own protection. A 2023 BirdLife-network review lists Buljarica as Important Bird and Biodiversity Area ME006.

Over the Malo Brdo pine saddle to a compact wooded cove south of Petrovac: a curved shore between green headlands, open Adriatic water. Montenegro's official Blue Flag list names Lučice bathing site 26A, operated by Pešter DOO, for the 2026 season — a seasonal award for the managed site, not a promise that every corner of the bay or every future season is the same.

Kastio is Petrovac's best-known silhouette, but the low walls above the harbour are not an intact Venetian castle. Three layers sit on the headland: a 16th-century Kastelo tower, later demolished; a Lazaret quarantine complex reshaped under Austrian rule; and 20th-century memorials. Offshore float Katič and Sveta Nedjelja, about 800 m out inside protection zone II of Katič Nature Park — anchoring is prohibited there and visits are controlled and approval-based.

Reported in 1902 in an olive grove about 300 metres from the sea: a coastal residence begun around the end of the first or start of the second century, enlarged over generations, rebuilt after destruction as a working estate with olive-oil equipment, and abandoned in the early seventh century. A 2017 reopening notice is not a current schedule — the site was described as being in very poor condition in 2019, so confirm access with Budva Museums before walking out here.

Hand-cut tunnels carry the old coast road through the headland, and Budva has documented unsafe sections on a planned 320 m stretch of the path — no completed lighting or guaranteed walking time is on record. Above the shore stands the unfinished Hotel As: contracts from 2002, a company sale in 2009, cases still unresolved in 2025. The Government has initiated a termination proceeding, not completed one.

Three church layers above the Budva–Petrovac road, with 1223/1226 and 1351 as confirmed construction dates; the royal founders belong to local and church tradition rather than to the record. Tradition also holds that a stone pillar by the road kept a jug of wine for any passing traveller — there is no surviving hollow cup to find, and no proof of a six-century custom.
