The Roman Road — Petrovac & Paštrovići

Petrovac & Paštrovići

The Roman Road

Petrovac began as a station on the Roman coastal road; this path of health strings pine forest, cliff-edge sea path and lit rock-cut tunnels between three very different beaches.

Conviene saber

  • The tunnels are lit, but the lighting is recent and outages happen — carry a phone torch; the longest tunnel runs 497 m.
  • Do not enter the Hotel As ruin at Perazića Do — it is an unsecured concrete shell.
  • Getting back: Budva–Petrovac buses run every 40–60 minutes in summer; from Reževići, flag the coastal bus on the Adriatic Highway above the monastery — the final climb ends on the road shoulder, walk it facing traffic.
  • Water and food: Lučice and Petrovac are the reliable stops; nothing at Perazića Do outside July–August; Buljarica’s two kilometres are shadeless.
  • After rain, Buljarica’s wetland margins stay muddy — keep to the beach berm in spring.

Buljarica

Three hundred hectares of reedbed behind two kilometres of nearly empty beach — the riviera’s last unbuilt bay, and the first landfall for birds that cross the Adriatic from Africa each spring.

Petrovac & Kastello

The Venetian Kastello was a quarantine station and wine warehouse dressed as a fortress. Off the promenade float Katič and Sveta Nedjelja — the islet chapel is a sailor’s shipwreck vow, and locals still swim out to ring its bell for luck.

Found under an olive grove in 1902: the mosaic floors of a 3rd–4th-century Roman villa rustica, a ten-by-fifteen-metre stretch now under glass — the farm that gave this walk its name.

A kilometre of hand-cut tunnels — one blocked side-branch once led straight into Hotel As, Yugoslavia’s resort dream frozen mid-checkout since 2002 — then daylight, and a lonely beach under the Reževići cliffs.

Founded by King Stefan the First-Crowned around 1226. For six centuries a hollowed stone column by the road — the kamenica — was kept filled with wine by the villagers, free for any passing stranger.
