Kumbor occupies a quiet stretch of the Herceg Novi municipality between Meljine and Bijela, where the coast is a run of small sandy coves divided by low concrete piers and the houses sit close above the water. For decades this was naval land, and the conversion of that base into the Portonovi marina and resort has given the village an unusual pairing: village mornings — fishermen, a corner shop, the smell of somebody's grill — and, fifteen minutes' walk along the seafront, superyachts, a marina promenade and restaurants that stay open late.
The water in front is the outer arm of the Bay of Kotor, so ships bound for Kotor and Tivat pass at close range and sunsets run down the open channel. Herceg Novi's old town, with its stepped lanes, the Forte Mare bastion and the Kanli Kula fortress, is a short drive or bus ride west, and the Pet Danica promenade continues on from there toward Igalo. Eastward, the ferry at Kamenari crosses the Verige narrows to Lepetane and shortens the run to Tivat, Porto Montenegro and the airport. Olive and fig trees still hold most of the gardens along this shore.
