The town of Plav holds nearly half the municipality on its own. Murino is thirteenth of the twenty settlements MONSTAT publishes, and the only one in the municipality whose dead the state recognises as civilian victims of war.

Who held the crossroads

An Ottoman register of 1582–83 lists the Plav nahiyah, eighteen villages in the Sanjak of Scutari, and Ottoman the valley stayed until 1912. Widths are to scale.

Murino är en by i Plav kommun i östra Montenegro, vid Lim i dalen mellan Andrijevica och Plav. Den ligger nedanför Prokletijes förberg, ungefär två timmar från Podgorica.

Vad hände i Murino 1999?

NATO-flyg träffade bron i byn den 30 april 1999 under Kosovokampanjen. Sex civila dödades, tre av dem barn. Ett minnesmärke i byn anger deras namn, och datumet uppmärksammas här varje år.

Finns det något att se?

Minnesmärket, floden och själva dalen. Murino är en liten ort vid en genomfartsväg snarare än ett resmål, men omgivningen — Lim mellan skogklädda sluttningar med de höga topparna bakom — är skäl nog att sakta ned.

Det fungerar som ett stopp, inte som bas. Plav och Gusinje, tjugo minuter bort, har boendet, guiderna och startpunkterna för Prokletije; Murino har några få rum och inte mycket mer.

Hur är vägen?

Dalvägen mellan Andrijevica och Plav är god och vacker och följer Lim hela sträckan. På vintern hålls den öppen men kan gå trögt, och sidovägarna in till byarna är en helt annan sak.

När bör man passera?

På sommaren för bergen bortom, och på hösten för själva dalen, när bokskogarna på båda sidor skiftar. På vintern finns få skäl att stanna, om du inte ska till backarna ovanför Plav.

These are the settlement’s own counts, not the municipality’s: 545 people in 2003, 462 in 2011, 171 at the 2023 census. Plav municipality barely moved between the last two counts, 9,081 to 9,050 — but inside it the town of Plav grew, from 3,717 to 4,121.

The year that fixed the name

Murino, 30 April: NATO bombs strike the village at the junction. Six civilians are killed — girls of nine and twelve, a boy of thirteen, and three adults of forty-seven, sixty-three and sixty-seven — and four people are seriously hurt. It is the heaviest civilian toll of the campaign anywhere in Montenegro.
The shop — the fullest account puts the attack at four in the afternoon: a first bomb in front of the bridge about a kilometre off, taken locally for a warning, then the next one directly on the village shop.
The campaign — Operation Allied Force ran seventy-eight days, 24 March to 10 June. Murino was struck in its sixth week, with six more still to run.
Montenegro — the republic is bombed several times through the spring, and NATO declines to shore up the precarious position of its anti-Milošević leader, Milo Đukanović.

Her reconstruction puts the attack at four in the afternoon, after a first bomb in front of the bridge about a kilometre off, and names the dead: Julija Brudar, 9; Olivera Maksimović, 12; Miroslav Knežević, 13; Vukić Vuletić, 47; Milka Kocanović, 63; Manojlo Komatina, 67. Two more girls, running a hundred metres behind their sisters, survived with scratches.

Pastrmka — the Lim trout

The water that runs past the junction is why anglers come to this valley. Between Lake Plav, the Ljuča and the Lim it holds brown trout and the endemic blatnjača, grayling, huchen, pike and nase; the European fly-fishing championship was held on the lake and the two rivers in July 2019.
