Bijelo Polje ligger ved elva Lim nord i Montenegro, nær grensen til Serbia, om lag 100 km fra Podgorica langs vei. Det er en av de større byene i nord og en stasjon på jernbanen Beograd–Bar, og dermed lett å nå uten bil.

En kirke fra 1100-tallet i utkanten av byen, og grunnen til at Bijelo Polje dukker opp i enhver litteraturhistorie: her ble Miroslavs evangeliar skrevet for fyrst Miroslav på 1180-tallet, det eldste bevarte kyrilliske håndskriftet fra området.
På Nasjonalmuseet i Beograd, ikke i Bijelo Polje. UNESCO førte det opp i registeret Memory of the World i 2005. Kirken der det ble laget står fortsatt, og byen tar vare på et faksimile.
Øst for byen ligger Đalović-juvet med sitt grottesystem, blant de lengste på Balkan og fortsatt under utforskning. I sør byr Bjelasica på turer og skikjøring, og Lim selv brukes til rafting og fiske.

The cave is the reason to give the town a whole day: 10.5 km surveyed, the longest in Montenegro. The Akovo club guides it in small groups, summer and autumn only.

The sparkline is the municipality: 50,284 people in 2003, 38,662 in 2023 — nearly a quarter gone in twenty years. The town holds 11,635 of them, which leaves Bijelo Polje the fourth-largest municipality in Montenegro and the least urban of the big ones.
I mellomtiden, i 1912
Bijelo Polje, the First Balkan War opens on 9 October 1912. The Eastern detachment of the Montenegrin army, under brigadier Janko Vukotić and stationed around Kolašin, Žabljak and Andrijevica, takes Mojkovac, the town on the Lim and Berane inside a month. Ottoman Akova ends after four and a half centuries.
St Peter’s — the church that had served as a mosque since 1691 returns to the Orthodox parish. The rebuilt nave’s reconsecration is set for Petrovdan 1923; the founder’s plaque, moved under the Ottomans, now stands above the west door again.
The Sanjak — the district governed from Novi Pazar since 1865 and from Sjenica after 1902 is divided between Serbia and Montenegro. The frontier settles at Dobrakovo, fourteen kilometres north of town, where it still runs.
The Atlantic: the Titanic had gone down that April. Nineteen-twelve reached the Lim in October.
Today — the Ottoman name survives on the town’s mountaineering and caving club, Akovo, whose members guide the four-hour trips into Đalovića cave.

UNESCO put it on the Memory of the World register in 2005. The book went to Hilandar, then to King Aleksandar in 1896, and is now in the National Museum in Belgrade; Wikipedia’s account places the transcription itself, 1186–1190, in Kotor rather than here.
