Ivangrad is the former name of Berane, used from 1949 to 1992 during the Yugoslav period. The city was renamed in honour of the partisan leader Ivan Milutinović, a commander and senior figure in the wartime Communist movement who was killed in 1944. With the breakup of Yugoslavia the older name returned, and the town has been Berane again since 1992.
