Ten metres of ground separate this part of Njegoševa from the water, and the strip of Topla shoreline in front is one of the better pieces of beach in Herceg Novi: Rafaello, a short sandy beach with shallow entry, sunbeds and a bar, backed by the promenade. Around it are the usual coastal fixtures — several restaurants within a couple of minutes' walk, an ice-cream window, and the tennis courts that have been part of Topla's summer routine for decades, best played early or after six when the heat lets go.
That combination — swim, court, lunch, promenade — is most of what a day here needs. When you want more, the Pet Danica walkway carries you east into the Old Town, where the Sahat Kula gate opens onto stepped lanes, small squares and the Forte Mare bastion above the sea, or west to Igalo's long shallow shore and its spa institute. Evenings in Topla are unhurried: the promenade fills with people walking nowhere in particular, boats knock about in the shallows, and the far side of the bay entrance turns pink before the lights come on across the water.
