Naselje Brežine is the quiet grid of streets set back from Petrovac's main beach — two hundred metres of gentle slope between the front doors and the sand, enough to hold the noise of the promenade at a distance. It is a neighbourhood people actually live in: fig and lemon trees over the walls, a bakery that opens early, a small market for fruit and the day's bread, and cars parked in shade under the pines.
The beach at the bottom of the hill is the reddish-sand one Petrovac is known for, sheltered between headlands and shallow at the edges, which suits small children. Past its southern end the old fort marks the start of the coast path to Lučice cove, ten minutes away and quieter. Meals are usually a matter of walking down to the promenade — grilled fish, ćevapi, pizza and ice cream in roughly equal measure — or heading up into the hills behind for a konoba with pršut and homemade wine. Buses from the stand in the centre run along the Adriatic highway to Budva and Bar, which makes a car optional for a week by the sea.
