Mala plaža or Women's Beach?

Two beaches 0.8 km apart, measured the same way. Mala plaža and Women's Beach side by side, on the nine things that decide which one your afternoon should go to.

The short answer

Choose Mala plaža for

  • sand underfoot rather than pebble
  • water that stays shallow a long way out
  • room — it is half again as long

Choose Women's Beach for

  • pebble, and the clearer water that comes with it
  • real depth close to shore
  • quiet

Each in our own words

Mala plaža

Mala plaža is where Ulcinj swims, eats and walks in the evening, with the fortified Old Town on the rock above every view. The sand is real, the bay shallow and sheltered, and the promenade behind it is lined with restaurants. It is a lively, multicultural town beach rather than a place for space, and it is the natural first stage of the Pinješ Pines walk east to Ženska plaža and Velika plaža.

From mid-morning in high summer it is crowded and loud, and nothing about toilets, lifeguards or water results is published for it; for room, go to Velika plaža.

Women's Beach

Ženska plaža is a small fenced cove on the pine-covered Pinješ shore, entered by steps, with a cave at the back and a spring that puts hydrogen sulphide into the water at 24 °C. Montenegro’s tourism organisation calls it a women-only cove, and that is how it has been used for generations. Go for the quiet and the oddity, not for a cure; the guide found historical borehole chemistry and no clinical evidence at all.

Nothing durable is published about price, hours, who is admitted or what is on site — all of it is a same-day question at the gate — and the entries are slippery rock with awkward ladders.
