About the area
Kotor is not really a single town but the head of a long, branching bay that the mountains almost close off from the sea. Boats enter through a narrows called Verige, only a few hundred metres wide, and open into an inner basin ringed by settlements that each kept their own character: Muo and Prčanj on the western shore, Dobrota strung along the east, Stoliv under its chestnut woods, Perast with two islets in front of it, and Risan, where Roman floor mosaics survive from the second century.
The walled town is the hub for all of it. Buses and excursion boats leave from the waterfront, the market sets up against the northern wall in the morning, and the restaurants and bars stay busy until late. Wherever you stay on the Kotor riviera the shape of a day is similar: swim early from the stone platforms while the water is still, take the shade in the afternoon, then head into the old town in the evening. The season runs from May to October; outside it, the bay turns quiet, green and very wet.
