This stretch of Topla carries more history than its low garden walls suggest. Immediately beside it stands the old Eparchial residence known locally as Njegoš's school, a protected building from the era when Topla was a settlement of sea captains and clergy rather than a suburb. The neighbourhood grew along the shore in that pattern — stone houses, gardens of fig and oleander, and a shoreline metres from the front gate, now traced by the Pet Danica promenade.
The practical geography is generous: the centre of Herceg Novi one way, Igalo the other, both a few hundred metres off, with tennis courts, beaches and cafés in between. Igalo is the reason many guests come outside summer — the Institute Dr Simo Milošević treats with local peloid mud and mineral water, and its programmes fill the town's shoulder months. That suits a climate mild enough through autumn and winter for outdoor coffee and long promenade walks, and theatrical in February when the Mimosa Festival takes over. Spring brings wisteria and citrus blossom to the same gardens, and the sea is warm enough to swim from May until well into the autumn.
