Veliki Pijesak is a shingle bay on the coast road south of Bar, one of a run of small beaches that make up the quieter end of the Montenegrin seaboard. The water here is clean and clear, the bay shelves gently, and the beach is properly equipped in season with loungers, showers, a lifeguard service and a scatter of places to eat without ever taking on the crowds of the Budva riviera. Days fall into an easy pattern: sea in the morning, shade and something cold in the middle of the day, and swimming again once the sun drops behind the hill.
The surrounding slope is planted with olives and figs, and paths between the houses lead up to points where you can see the whole curve of coast at once. Small excursion boats call at the beach through the summer, which is the simplest way to reach neighbouring coves — Utjeha, Maljevik and further bays that have no road worth the name. By car it is a short run north to Bar for the market, the marina and the ruined city of Stari Bar in the hills, or south to Ulcinj, where the old town stands on a rock above the sea and the sand keeps going for kilometres.
