About the area
Antivari is the old Venetian name for Bar, and Zeleni Pojas — the green belt — is the coastal strip of gardens, olives and citrus that runs along the shore just outside the town. The Adriatic highway passes behind, which makes this an easy place to be based, while the beach lies directly opposite: shingle, open to the horizon, and long enough to spread out on. Local life goes on around you rather than being staged for visitors, and mornings usually begin with someone watering a garden or opening a shutter onto the sea.
The position is genuinely useful for exploring. Petrovac and its two small bays are under twenty kilometres up the coast, Budva and its walled old town a little further; inland, Skadar Lake National Park spreads out in reeds, water lilies and monastery islands about twenty kilometres away, and Ada Bojana's river-and-sea sandbar sits at the southern border. Closer at hand are Bar's own draws: the marina, the port with its ferry to Bari, the ruined city of Stari Bar under Rumija, and the ancient olive tree at Mirovica that locals treat as a monument in its own right. Fish restaurants along this shore keep to the season and the day's catch.
