The water along the Topla shore is calm for most of the summer — the mouth of the bay is wide enough to keep it fresh and narrow enough to kill the swell — which is why so much of local life happens in it or on it. People swim laps between the platforms before breakfast, kayaks and paddleboards go out from the pebble coves, and small boats sit on moorings a stone's throw from the seawall. Along the shore, the promenade doubles as the neighbourhood's front garden.
Behind it, Herceg Novi earns its reputation as a town of plants. A sheltered microclimate supports mimosa, agave, palm, magnolia, citrus and bougainvillea in ordinary garden plots, and the effect in spring is close to subtropical. The Old Town is around twenty minutes east on the flat, its gates opening onto stepped lanes and the Forte Mare bastion; Igalo, with its shallow beach and spa institute, is a similar walk west. Further out, excursion boats run to the caves and beaches at the entrance to the bay, and the coastal road east reaches Perast and Kotor in about an hour.
