Tabačina lies just outside the northern walls, where the Škurda river comes down out of its gorge and meets the bay. The name remembers the tanners who worked here when the trade was too pungent for the town itself; today it is the quietest way into Kotor, over a small bridge and through the North Gate, with the fortifications rising sheer above the street. People swim off the concrete directly below the walls, in cold water where the river mixes with the sea.
This is also the trailhead end of town. The stairway to San Giovanni fortress starts a short way along, some 1,350 steps up past the church of Our Lady of Remedy, and the older mule track known as the Ladder of Kotor carries on over the ridge towards Njeguši. Do either early, then come back down for the market by the Sea Gate. In the other direction the shore road runs north into Dobrota's line of captains' palaces and on to Orahovac and Perast. At night the floodlit walls hang directly overhead, which is a strange and rather good thing to walk home under.
