Life in Rose is measured in boat lengths rather than kilometres. The village occupies the last stretch of the Luštica peninsula, closed to cars, with houses sitting directly on the water and a Mediterranean garden behind almost every one — oleander, pomegranate and rosemary running down to the stone. Mornings are for swimming off the rocks in water clear enough to see the bottom several metres down; the afternoon heat is best spent under the vines, since the village faces the channel and catches whatever breeze is moving.
Renting a small boat, or hiring one with a skipper, opens up the part of the coast that roads cannot reach. From the harbour it is a short run to Žanjice and Mirišta, to the pebbles of Dobreč, out to the island fortress of Mamula and into the Blue Cave, and a longer one across the bay to Perast and the two islets. Herceg Novi is a quarter of an hour by water and Dubrovnik a day trip by road. On land, tracks over Luštica's shoulder pass through olive terraces and half-abandoned hamlets where the stone-walled fields are still worked by hand. The setting suits couples and families who want genuine quiet without being cut off from Kotor and Herceg Novi.
