Donji Štoj is the settlement strung along the middle of Velika plaža — flat land, sandy lanes, pine windbreaks and gardens of oleander behind low houses, with the sea about half a kilometre away down a straight road. It is a summer place rather than a town: quiet out of season, busy and easy-going in July and August, with the beach clubs of this middle section — the best-organised stretch of the Great Beach, and the part that has held Blue Flag status — serving food and drink from morning until late.
The sand here is at its widest and the water at its shallowest, warm and calm on most days, which is why the middle kilometres fill with families while the far end is left to kitesurfers and walkers. Behind the pines the Ulcinj plain runs inland past market gardens to the lagoons of the old salt works, where flamingos and thousands of migrating birds gather in spring and autumn. Ada Bojana, at the southern end of the beach, is close enough for an evening of grilled fish in the restaurants built over the river. In the other direction, the Old Town on its headland, the harbour and Mala plaža show Ulcinj's other face — stone lanes, museums and a promenade that stays busy past midnight.
