Javorovača is Žabljak's own ski ground, the gentler of the two areas above town and the one where children, ski schools and anyone still finding their balance spend the season. It is a short, open slope rather than a resort, with hire and instruction available in town and the runs at Savin Kuk — longer, steeper, higher on the massif — a few minutes away for when legs and confidence allow. Snow generally holds from December into March, and the open plateau suits cross-country skiers as well.
Out of season the same meadow returns to pasture and the surroundings turn into walking country. Žabljak sits at about 1,450 metres in the lap of Durmitor, ringed by twenty-three peaks above 2,200 metres and eighteen mountain lakes, with the Tara canyon — the deepest in Europe — cut into the ground to the north. Crno jezero is the standard half-day; the Sedlo pass road and the ascent of Bobotov Kuk are the serious ones; rafting trips on the Tara run through the warm months. Distances here are short on the map and long underfoot, so days fill up faster than you expect.
