Tuzi is a small town on the plain southeast of Podgorica, close enough to the capital for a short drive and close enough to Albania that the border post at Božaj lies just beyond it. It became a municipality in its own right in 2018 and serves as the centre of Malesija, the region of villages spread between the Cijevna river, the eastern edge of Skadar Lake and the first ridges of the mountains that rise toward the Prokletije. Its defining quality is its mix.

Tuzi lies about 12 km south-east of Podgorica on the road to the Albanian border, in the plain between Skadar lake and the Prokletije foothills. It became a separate municipality in 2018 after decades as part of Podgorica.
It is the centre of Montenegro's Albanian community, with a clear majority in the municipality. Albanian is in official use alongside Montenegrin, and the food, festivals and church and mosque calendar all reflect that.
A wide, low fall on the Cijevna river a few kilometres from town, locally called Niagara for its shape rather than its size. It runs hard in spring and can dry to almost nothing by August; there are cafes on the bank.
Yes. The Cemovsko plain around Tuzi holds some of the largest single vineyards in Europe, planted mainly with vranac and krstac, and small family producers sell along the roads. Harvest runs from late August into October.
Yes, at Bozaj, about 10 km on. It is the main crossing towards Shkodra and Tirana, open around the clock, and the busiest land route between the two countries in summer.
As a short trip from Podgorica: the waterfall, a meal, and the drive up into the Malesija villages towards the mountains. It is a working plain town rather than a sight, but it is the easiest way to see this side of the country.
