About the area

Montenegro's coast is short enough to drive end to end in an afternoon and varied enough that few people bother trying. In the northwest the Bay of Kotor folds inland for tens of kilometres between mountains, its shores lined with old maritime settlements: Herceg Novi, Kumbor, Đenovići, Morinj, Perast, Dobrota and Kotor itself, where a walled Venetian town stands under a fortress-topped cliff. South of the Vrmac and Lovćen ridges the coastline changes character entirely, with Budva's Old Town and its run of beaches, the fortified islet of Sveti Stefan, then Petrovac, Bar and finally Ulcinj, where the sand of Velika Plaža stretches for over ten kilometres toward the Albanian border.

Wherever you land along that line, the interior is close. An hour or two inland puts you at Skadar Lake with its pelicans and island monasteries, the old royal capital of Cetinje, Ostrog Monastery set into its cliff face, or the glacial lakes of Durmitor and Biogradska Gora. The practical differences matter more than the kilometres: the bay gives you calm water, shade and history, the open coast gives you longer beaches, more sun and later nights, and the inland roads deliver a completely different country perched a thousand metres higher up.
