Living on Trg od oružja means living on Kotor's main stage. The Square of Arms takes its name from the Venetian arsenal that once repaired the fleet's weapons here, and the buildings around it — the arsenal, the Rector's Palace and the small Napoleonic theatre — still form the civic heart of a town that has never stopped using its squares. The clock tower and the old pillar of shame stand a few paces from the Sea Gate, so this is where everyone arriving through the walls first stops, coffee in hand, before the lanes fold in behind them.
Step out and the whole Old Town is within a couple of minutes: the Cathedral of St Tryphon, consecrated in 1166, the sailors' church of St Nicholas, and alleys narrow enough that laundry lines nearly meet overhead. The square is also where the calendar happens — the St Tryphon celebrations in early February with the Boka Navy in full dress, the winter carnival, concerts under the walls all summer. The marina and quay sit a minute away on the seaward side, with boats out to Perast and the bay islets, and the stairway to San Giovanni fortress begins just uphill. Evenings here are lively rather than quiet; the bars around the square keep going late in season.
