Inland from Igalo the land climbs into Sutorina, a belt of gardens, olive terraces and old stone houses looking down on the Bay of Kotor. The vegetation is properly Mediterranean here, laurel, rosemary, fig and pine, and the difference from the seafront a few minutes below is immediate: cicadas instead of traffic, mountain air moving through in the evening, and a night sky you can actually see. The water in this western corner of the bay is among the cleanest in the Boka, and the beaches near Njivice and Igalo are a short drive down.
With a car, this is one of the better bases in the country. Kotor and Perast lie around the bay, with the Kamenari ferry shortening the trip; Cetinje, Lake Skadar and Ostrog are day trips inland; Dubrovnik and Trebinje are just over the border in opposite directions; and the Tara canyon offers rafting for anyone willing to start early. Closer to home, boats from the local quays visit Our Lady of the Rocks, Žanjic and the Blue Cave, while Herceg Novi's old town, its stairs, fortresses and market are twenty minutes away. Families tend to settle into a rhythm of beach mornings and long, quiet afternoons up here.
