About the area
The mud is the reason all of this is here. The shallow, sheltered basin at the western end of the Bay of Kotor lays down a fine mineral peloid on its seabed, and the Igaljka thermal spring rises beside it; together with a mild Mediterranean climate they turned a small fishing settlement into Montenegro's spa town from the 1950s onward. The institute's grounds run to the water, with a park of palms and pines, its own beach and the start of the long seafront walkway that follows the coast east toward Herceg Novi.
Around it, Igalo is a town shaped by its guests: pharmacies, bakeries, fruit stalls, quiet cafes, and the pace of people who are here for weeks rather than days. Villa Galeb, built as Tito's residence above the shore, is part of the same chapter and still a landmark on this coast. When the treatment day ends, the options are close and gentle: swimming from the shallow beaches, a walk to Savina monastery among its cypresses, the fortresses and stepped lanes of Herceg Novi's old town, or a boat from the quays out to the mouth of the bay. In February the mimosa comes into flower everywhere.
