Mala plaža is Ulcinj in miniature: a short crescent of dark sand wrapped by the town on one side and the fortress headland on the other, the whole bay shallow and sheltered enough that it warms early in the season. Staying on it means the day can start with a swim before the sunbeds go out and end with one after the crowds thin. The promenade behind the sand carries the town's cafés, ice-cream counters and rental stands, and the sound of it stays with you — this is the lively side of Ulcinj, not the quiet one.
From the western end of the beach a ramp and steps climb into the Old Town, where the lanes hold a museum, a Venetian palace, the Balšić tower and terraces that look back over the bay. The green market and bus station are a few minutes inland. When the small beach fills, locals move on: to the rock shelves under the walls, to Tampiko around the point, or south-east onto Velika plaža, thirteen kilometres of open sand that never feels crowded. Boats leave the harbour in summer for Ada Bojana and the coves along the cliffs toward Valdanos.
