About the area
Beogradska runs along the base of Gorica, the pine-covered hill that gave Podgorica its name and still serves as the city's park. Marked paths and a running loop climb through the trees to the monument to the Partisan Fighter at the top, from where the whole capital is visible with the Morača threading through it and the mountains standing behind. It takes five minutes to walk from the street into full shade, which in a city that regularly exceeds forty degrees counts for a great deal.
Below the hill the centre begins: Trg Republike, the pedestrianised café strip on Hercegovačka, the Gallery of Modern Art and the plane trees of Njegošev Park are all within fifteen minutes on foot. The stadium and the Morača sports centre are close, and the riverside paths connect the two halves of town. Podgorica's eating is unshowy and good, with grill houses, bakeries open before dawn, and konobas that only fill up late. The airport is about twenty minutes south, and the newer motorway section running north from the city has cut the drive toward the Tara canyon and the high mountains considerably.
