Sutomore
About 1,250 m of real sand mixed with fine gravel in a wide south-westerly bay, with a railway station five minutes from the water and the cheapest sunbeds on the coast.
Our verdict
Sutomore is a beach with a town attached, and honest about it: a long, gently shelving strand of sand and fine gravel that suits children, concession blocks with free sand between them, toilets, showers and changing cabins, and a promenade of grills and cafés. The trains from Belgrade land here every July and the beach fills accordingly. For a family week on a budget it does the job; for quiet, Čanj is 9 km away.

- By busCoastal buses Bar–Budva (more than 30 a day, about €2 single); local trains on the Belgrade–Bar line stop at Sutomore station (€1.20 to Bar, €2.60 to Podgorica)

Know before you swim
- The busiest sand on the Bar coast in July and August — before 10:00 you choose a spot, after it you take one
- The railway and the coast road run directly behind the beach: level crossings and traffic between the station and the sand
- The ridge shades the eastern end of the strand well before the western end loses the sun — move west for the evening
- An open south-westerly bay: chop on the shallows on a jugo afternoon

- Most listings say about 1,250 m; older sources range from 850 m to 1.3 km, and a 2025 planning assessment describes the whole strand at about 1,600 m. The bay is wide and gently curving, so where you measure from matters.
- Can I get there by train?
- Yes. Sutomore is the penultimate station before Bar on the Belgrade–Bar line; only local trains stop (€1.20 to Bar, €2.60 to Podgorica, about an hour). The faster international trains pass through.
- Where is the free sand?
- The unmarked sand between the concession blocks. Lay a towel there; the loungers on either side are €8–12 for two with an umbrella.
