Our verdict
Veliki Pijesak is the resort beach of Dobra Voda: organised in rows by three concessions, a lit promenade with cafés behind it, a Blue Flag on the Best Sunset sector in 2026, and Veliki Kamen sitting in the water just off the shingle. The geometry is the point — no headland ever gets in the way of the sunset, which in late August and September sets almost due west at around 19:30. Come for the evening; the swimming is good but exposed.

Straight-line distances — Montenegro's roads are mountain roads, so the drive is longer.
- By busBar–Ulcinj coastal lines stop on the road above the beach (about €2 and 16 minutes from Bar station)
- By carBar 11.5 km (18 min) and Ulcinj 16.1 km (20 min) in free-flowing traffic; parking is limited and paid — a room with its own space is worth paying for in August

Know before you swim
- Open to the sea and waves are frequent: a visitor drowned here in September 2024 going in after family caught in heavy sea — do not swim when waves are breaking
- The beach is eroding, losing half a metre to a metre a year; the shingle bank steepens after storms
- Veliki Kamen islet is only about 23 m off the shingle — swimmers and small craft converge on it
- In August the coast road through Veliki Pijesak can cost an hour; the road is also the only way down to the promenade

- Is Veliki Pijesak sand or pebble?
- Mostly shingle and small pebbles with sandy patches, whatever the name (“big sand”) suggests. Bring shoes for the waterline.
- When is the best sunset?
- Late August to mid-September, when the sun sets close to due west over open water at about 19:00–19:45. Computed positions run from 238° in December to 302° in June, and every one of them lands on the sea.
- How do I get there without a car?
- Bar–Ulcinj buses stop on the coast road above the beach: about €2 and 16 minutes from Bar bus station, 20 minutes from Ulcinj. In August the road itself can add an hour.
