Dobra Voda — Dobre Vode on the land register and many listings — is the largest of the nine Mrkojevići villages between Bar and Ulcinj: 1,334 people in 2023, named for the springs that still run off the slopes of Lisinj. The old village, first written down as “de Dobra Voda” in 1406, sits at about 240 m around a mosque of 1802; most of its houses fell in the 1979 earthquake and were rebuilt. Below it, a resort grew only after the coast road opened in 1973.
Dobra Voda alone holds 36% of the nine villages’ 3,708 people — more than Pečurice and Kunje, the next two, put together.

Slow for a quarter of a century, then pulled downhill by the sea: 588 people in 1948, 672 in 1971, 1,334 in 2023. The growth came with the coastal belt of Bijela Glavica, Nišice and Marin Ploča, which Osman Grgurević described as a textbook unplanned holiday settlement. A quarter of residents are under twenty.

The year the village fell and the beach began
Dobra Voda,at 06:19 on 15 April 1979 a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the coast between Bar and Ulcinj. Most houses in the village came down; they were rebuilt as the modern houses that stand there now, and the mosque of 1802 was repaired over the next seven years.
Veliki Pijesak —that summer a family pitched a relief tent on the empty shingle. Within a few years the Laković brothers had opened the first kafana and the Plavi Jadran pastry shop was serving the beach, as it still does.
The coast road —opened only six years earlier, on 4 July 1973. Until then, Grgurević writes, this shore was uninhabited.
Elsewhere in 1979 —the same earthquake wrecked Kotor’s old town, which UNESCO inscribed on the World Heritage list that year and immediately placed on its danger list.

Dobra Voda is on Montenegro’s southern coast in Bar municipality, between Bar and Ulcinj. Its beach, Veliki Pijesak, is 11.5 km by road from Bar bus station and 16 km from Ulcinj; the old village sits about 3 km inland at roughly 240 m.
Are Dobre Vode and Dobra Voda the same place?
Yes. Dobra Voda is the name of the census settlement; Dobre Vode is the name of its cadastral district and the form many listings use. Both mean “good water”, after the village springs.
Is Veliki Pijesak a sandy beach?
Only partly. Veliki Pijesak is mainly shingle and small pebbles with some sandy patches, about 380–480 m long and open to the sea, so water shoes help. For a sand beach, Velika Plaža in Ulcinj is 24 km south.
Can you swim at Dobra Voda?
Yes. Veliki Pijesak is an organised public beach with a buoyed swimming area, and its Best Sunset section holds a Blue Flag for 2026. In the August 2026 samples its water was rated “good”. The beach faces open sea, so avoid swimming when waves are breaking.
How do you get to Dobra Voda from Podgorica airport?
By road it is 57 km, about 75 minutes without traffic, via Bar. Without a car, take a bus or train to Bar, then a Bar–Ulcinj bus to Dobra Voda — about €2 and 16 minutes — or a taxi for the last 11.5 km.
When is the best time to visit Dobra Voda?
The first half of September: the sea is still about 24 °C, the sun sets almost due west at around 19:00, and the August crowds have gone. June is also good, with the longest evenings. Many beach venues close around 1 September.
Why is the sunset at Veliki Pijesak special?
The beach faces west-south-west into open sea. The sun sets between 238° in December and 302° in June, and the nearest headlands to the north lie at 314° or further round, so it goes down over the water in every month of the year.
Is Dobra Voda good for families?
Yes, if you stay close to the sand. The shingle calls for water shoes, a buoy line marks the swimming area and shade can be rented; Mali Pijesak is calmer on busy days. Expect heavy traffic and full beaches in August.
