Donje Polje

Lower field, and that is a fair description. It is a settlement on the outskirts of Podgorica on the flat expanse of the Zeta plain — level, open, well-watered ground of the sort that made this plain the country's agricultural heart long before Podgorica grew into a city.

No old town and no monument to seek out. What Donje Polje offers is position: the centre of Podgorica is a short drive away, and the airport lies on the same plain to the south.

Riverside walks along the Moraca, the Millennium Bridge, the modern Cathedral of Christ's Resurrection, and the small Ottoman quarter of Stara Varos with its clock tower — all a short drive from here.

Vineyard and vegetable country, hot and green through summer, with the Cijevna river cutting a rocky gorge to the east and Skadar lake spreading south beyond the airport. The ruins of Doclea, the Roman city later known as Duklja, stand on open ground just north of the capital.

Seriously hot. July and August regularly push past 35 degrees, and this is among the warmest inhabited spots in Europe. Spring and autumn are far more comfortable, and the low October light across the fields is worth the trip on its own.

Travellers with a car who want quiet, inexpensive lodging within easy reach of the capital, the airport and the lake — not anyone looking for a resort or a walkable centre.
