The charms of autumn are a wonderful motivation to get out of the house and enjoy the beauty of colors and outdoor adventures, which we have the opportunity to experience in the Montenegrin glades, hills and mountains. We consider ourselves lucky, because in Montenegro we have many mountain destinations, and in just a few hours' drive we can visit any corner of our idyllic country. Hiking, as one of the favorite mountain activities, is especially interesting during the autumn period when the treetops change to warm colors and the leaves begin to fall. A walk in good weather, surrounded by the colorful charms of nature is a great combination to spend a day on the trail. Mountain regions are particularly attractive destinations and stand out for several reasons. First of all, these areas are the least populated places in the country and therefore the untouched nature of these areas is perfect for relaxation and recreation. And the second reason, which could in itself be a challenge for your visit, is the magnificent nature of the mountainous part of Montenegro, which truly takes your breath away with its beauty and charm. The combination of these features creates superb trails for a pleasant walk. Montenegro has countless spectacular trails, each of which has its own special characteristics. Whether you're looking for an intense hike or simply want to spend a day leisurely strolling through nature, we're sure you'll find the right trail for you. We are convinced that this kind of experience will leave even the most uninterested traveler delighted, and will allow visitors to get to know a completely new side of our country. Read on to learn about the least explored trails and what sets them apart from the rest, as well as when is the best time to visit. We have compiled a list of five favorite mountain places located throughout Montenegro. These are places that are easy to access and are suitable for a day trip or an extended weekend.

Risan - Perast The hiking trail Risan - Perast is characterized by a fantastic landscape throughout the tour with fewer crowds. There are different routes that lead to the main peak with a panoramic view. One of the favorite pleasures on this trail is the sense of wilderness and true adventure.

The hike lasts about eight hours, where the first two hours are uphill to the Fortress, and from the top there is a wonderful view of Risan that is definitely worth the effort. Short training is necessary for hiking because of the rocky terrain of this trail. The descent towards Risno takes about two hours, where the trail ends at Perasta Street.

Donji Stoliv - Lepetane - Vrdola - Prčanj - Donji Stoliv The tourist town of Stoliv is known for the Camellia Days festival, but also for an interesting hiking trail with a divine landscape. The hike starts from the parking lot in Lepetan with a beautiful view of the Church of Our Lady from 1585. A stony path leads you up the hill, through chestnut and olive trees to the viewpoint.

We recommend the route from Lepetan to higher points. Here is the best view and the trail is marked. A fairly easy hike takes about 20 minutes to the end of the trail. If you want a bigger challenge, or a different experience, we recommend the route Donji Stoliv, but only if you are not afraid of heights to the mountain Velji Vrh - ⁠Gornji Stoliv (260 m above sea level).

Mrtvica canyon Kolašin One of the most popular and beautiful hiking tours in Montenegro is the Kanjon Mrtvica trail. This trail has a much steeper descent/ascent than other hiking trails. Among other things, it is followed by rock walls on the sides, and in some parts the path is extremely narrow, so that even a foot can barely fit. The former army of Yugoslavia formed this track for military purposes. Today, this trail is used for recreation and enjoying the natural beauty of the northern part of Montenegro, which you will be delighted with.

The trail, combined with a waterfall, stream, canyon source and other bays, in one of the largest tributaries of the Morača, can be quite demanding for walking. In some parts, this eleven kilometer long canyon is up to 1,100 m deep. A special attraction in the Mrtvice canyon is the source of the White Nerini. The river is full of cascades, waterfalls and miniature beaches. The best period to visit this divine place is the second half of April and the beginning of May; definitely avoid the summer months.

The village of Žlijebi - trail near Herceg Novi Thanks to the ancient local site of high-quality slab stone, the village of Žlijebi is made exclusively of stone. The walls and roofs of houses, watering holes, threshing floor, fences and even poultry houses are made of stone. The gray color of the stone gives Žlijebi a special contrast with the green surroundings of terraced fields and orchards. The village also has its "village prince" - a stone boulder located high in the cliff that resembles a human head. On the edge of the village is the church of St. Nikola, whose plateau is known as one of the most beautiful viewpoints at the entrance to Boka Kotorska.

Although the village itself is built on flat ground, the surrounding cliffs facing south cause the appearance of strong upward currents of superheated air. These thermal springs are regularly used by birds of prey, and in recent years more and more by paragliders, so a paragliding airstrip has been opened above the village. The path, which is rich in medicinal plants, is easy to walk through the forest and nature to the church of St. Nikola and the viewpoint, with one of the most beautiful viewpoints at the entrance to Boka Kotorska.

Durmitor - Ice cave Ledena Pečina is a trail with light traffic, located near Žabljak and ⁠Black Lake, and is classified as more difficult. The trail was primarily used for walking, camping, nature trips and excursions. We recommend it to anyone who enjoys walking and is planning a trip to Montenegro. The best time to go for a walk through the beautiful nature and enjoy everything this area has to offer is from May to September.

The trail is well marked and easy to follow, but most of the path can be difficult to walk. It is best to bring suitable hiking shoes. The most beautiful view is before the Ice Cave, when approaching the cave from the south. If you are in average shape, the expected hiking time on this trail is about six hours. We must emphasize that the path to the Ice Cave can be covered and the cave itself blocked by snow even in July. We are sure that the long, and in some parts difficult, path will be replaced by an incredible view of nature and surroundings.
