Seeing the Mimosa Festival
When. The festival runs through February in Herceg Novi, timed to the mimosa coming into flower along this stretch of coast — the town's climate brings it out weeks before most of the Mediterranean. Exact dates shift each year, so check locally before planning a trip around it.
What happens. Several weeks of parades, brass bands, majorette processions, boat displays and food stalls, with the old town and the Pet Danica promenade as the stage. Fish and local wine are handed out at street level; it is a town festival rather than a ticketed event.
Coming for it. February is deep off-season, which means cheap rooms and an almost entirely local crowd, but also that many seasonal restaurants and hotels are shut. Days are mild and often bright, evenings cold. Herceg Novi is about 40 minutes from Tivat airport via the Kamenari ferry.
Why mimosa, and why here
Mimosa is not native to the Adriatic — it came from Australia by way of the Mediterranean nurseries of the 19th century, and took to the sheltered, frost-free pocket around Herceg Novi better than to almost anywhere else on this coast. The town's botanical inheritance, planted when it was an Austro-Hungarian health resort, is the reason the flower became its emblem rather than any other.
That is also why the festival lands in February: the bloom arrives here first, and a town whose season otherwise ends in October gets a second one in the middle of winter.
