Danilovgrad is located in the center of the Bjelopavlić plain, at the 17th kilometer between Podgorica and Nikšić (see it) - the two largest Montenegrin cities. The modern road to Danilovgrad, from Podgorica, initially leads past the site of Duklja, archaeological remains from the Roman period. The passing town of Spuž is located exactly between Podgorica and Danilovgrad. The entire Bjelopavlić plain can be seen from the local Turkish fortress (end of the 15th century). Fertile, it stretches 25 km all the way to Glava Zeta (where there is a hydropower plant). Spuž is known for its excellent flour, for its mills, but also for the fact that the central prison in Montenegro is located here.

Rocky, or as it is said in the text of the Montenegrin national anthem - hard hills, gently descend towards the valley of the river Zeta - the decoration of the entire plain. The river meanders through the greenery of a tame field, one of the rare Montenegrin granaries. In the center of that endemic fertility is Danilovgrad. This region has been the scene of angry battles and hard life for centuries. There are countless skirmishes that Montenegrin companies fought on the rocky sides around the Zeta Valley. In the 17th c. many families move from Bjelopavlić to Serbia. Even in the Second World War, fierce warfare was fought here. That is why a monument to partisan fighters was erected in the city, also in Lazin, and in Martinići there is a memorial complex in honor of the great victory over the Turks, won in 1796.

The city was named after the first secular ruler of Montenegro, Prince Danilo (Petrović). Until then, the country was organized as a bishopric, which means that it was ruled by bishops, before Prince Danilo, also from the Petrović-Njegoš family. The foundations of Danilovgrad were laid in 1870, according to the mastermind - Prince Danilo. The name will be given by Danilo's successor, Prince (later King) Nikola I Petrović. The city plan was the work of engineer Dragutin Sarajlija, son of poet-patriot Sima Milutinović Sarajlija, Njegoš's teacher. Danilovgrad is finding it increasingly difficult to preserve the appearance of the town from the end of the 19th century. Liberation and progress called new people, new buildings were built for them, and factories were started. Today, during the summer, numerous cultural and entertainment events take place here, of which the Bjelopavlić summer should be highlighted. In the immediate vicinity of the town (at 2.5 km) is the Ždrebaonik monastery, known for the relics of St. Arsenia.
