The very thought of us coastal residents heading north in the December ice and snow didn't sound appealing at all. However, the promise given to a very dear friend could not be broken, and it was high time to introduce you to our largest city in the north of Montenegro, Bijelo Polje. And so, after bad weather in Boka, which was almost drowned in rain, we set off!
To our great surprise, from the moment we left Bioče and stepped north, the rain stopped and almost around every next bend we were showered with Tolkien scenes. Along the way, we stopped to observe the appetizers, which, without any exaggeration, look like from "The Lord of the Rings".
Guided by gorges and canyons, we arrived in Bijelo Polje.
The warmth of meeting friends, and the beauty of the area, made us immediately feel at home.
In the company of our host Iza Gušmirović and his family, we started walking around Bijela Polje. First we went on a tour of St. Peter's Church, which really surprised us with its architecture, completely unexpected for this part of Europe. Then we went to the famous Gušmirska Mosque „ this Mosque was transferred from Jabučina in 1741, all from hand to hand for a day and a night, by the congregation of Bijelo Polje" reads the plaque located at the entrance. Then we visited one of the rarely preserved houses from the 18th century, a typical construction for Bijelo Polje. Otherwise, a very interesting story is related to that old house. In it, the Bjepolojci hid Hadži Loj, a great hero and leader of the uprising against Turkish rule in Bosnia. There we saw the famous closets with hamias (bathrooms), which today represent a very valuable artistic treasure of national importance. After that, we went for a walk in the city center. First, we visited the Bijela Rada hotel, which our host, as a hard-working entrepreneur and a man educated in the West, is trying to transform into a modern hotel. We walked through the square all the way to the bridge over the river Lim, and then we visited the monuments to three famous Bjelopolje writers at the viewpoint above the bridge. There, Ćamil Sijarić, Risto Ratković and Miodrag Bulatović watch their city forever. We said goodbye to everyone and headed back through the nature "kidnapped" from Tolkien's works. Special thanks to our dear friend Izo, a longtime friend of our site.
Often the north of Montenegro, or traditionally the Hills, are not covered on websites to the same extent as southern Montenegro. With the help of our friends and associates, Montenegro.com hopes that this practice will become a thing of the past.
If you have a desire to help this section of ours or if you already have pictures and texts about the Mountains of Montenegro, please share them with us, and therefore with the world.
For our visitors, a big greeting from Bijelo Polje.
Thank you,
