Visiting the Djalovica gorge
Where it is. The Djalovica cave lies in the gorge of the same name near Bijelo Polje, in Montenegro's north-east. The gorge itself is a deep limestone canyon cut by the Bistrica, and the cave system running back from it is among the longest known in the country.
Access. This is not a developed show cave like Lipa. Exploration has been the work of speleologists rather than day visitors, and the deeper system is not open to casual entry. Plans to develop the site for tourism have been discussed for years, so check locally for the current position before travelling specifically to go inside.
What you can do. The gorge is worth the trip on its own account — a walk along the Bistrica through steep limestone walls, with the cave mouth as the destination. Go with someone who knows the ground, and treat any descent beyond the entrance as caving, with the equipment and company that implies.
Nearby. Bijelo Polje is the regional centre and the obvious base, and the town sits on the Belgrade railway. Mojkovac, the Tara canyon and Biogradska Gora national park are all within reach for a longer trip into the north.
