This page began as a 2017 collaboration promoting Four Points by Sheraton Kolašin as a hotel open in every season. That claim is no longer safe. Independent reporting says the former Hotel Lipka closed in May 2020 and had remained out of operation for more than five years by October 2025. A proposed reopening was reported, but this audit found no authoritative confirmation that it happened. The useful story now is how a live hotel became a stale booking signal—and how travelers can avoid paying on the strength of an old page.

What the evidence supports now
As of the research cutoff on 27 August 2026, the defensible conclusion is narrow: do not treat Four Points by Sheraton Kolašin as confirmed operating inventory without direct, current evidence. The old hotel domain redirected to a Marriott property URL, but that destination returned an automated-access denial during this audit; no dated room inventory or bookable Marriott result was confirmed. A local destination page explicitly says the hotel is “closed indefinitely,” even though the same page still carries contradictory copy saying it is open year-round.
A Vijesti investigation published in October 2025 reported that the hotel had been closed for more than five years. It also reported an unconfirmed sale and said a participant in the process expected a March reopening. A planned date is not an opening. No later statement from an operator, brand reservation engine or tourism authority was found confirming that guests were being accepted.
There are residual digital traces. Marriott Bonvoy Tours and Activities retains a page named for the property, but that page says the experiences are provided by a third party and are not owned, developed or sold by Marriott International. Marriott's editorial travel site recommended the hotel in October 2024. Neither page shows a functioning hotel reservation record. They are evidence that the name survived online, not evidence that a room can be occupied.
Montenegro.com's own legacy property record also remains discoverable and routes users toward rate comparison. It should be treated as a directory artifact until inventory is independently returned by a named booking partner. The broader where to stay in Kolašin guide is the better starting point for comparing currently operating areas and properties.
From Lipka to Four Points—and then closure
The building's history predates the Four Points sign. Vijesti reports that it operated as Hotel Lipka, encountered an inspection-related closure in 2012, later returned under temporary management and changed ownership before the international-brand conversion. A Government of Montenegro tourism announcement in late 2014 said Lipka would reopen for the winter after a two-year pause under the management of Budvanska Rivijera.
In 2016 a new owner signed a cooperation agreement with Starwood Hotels & Resorts, according to the later reporting. A 2017 academic study of international hotel chains in the country lists Four Points by Sheraton Kolašin as a 2016 market entry, while trade coverage and the original collaboration presented the public opening in 2017. Those accounts describe a conversion period, not necessarily a factual conflict: signing, branding, opening and publication can occur on different dates.
| Date | Evidence | What it proves | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2012 | Vijesti reports the Hotel Lipka operation was closed after irregularities | The building had an operational break before Four Points | The precise status of every month that followed |
| Late 2014 | Government announcement says Lipka will return after a two-year pause | A public reopening was announced under temporary management | Continuous operation through the later brand conversion |
| 2016–17 | Academic and promotional sources record the Four Points conversion and entry | The building entered an international hotel-chain phase | A single uncontested opening date or room count |
| May 2020 | Vijesti reports closure attributed to pandemic business difficulties | The operation stopped | That the closure was permanent |
| October 2024 | Marriott editorial still recommends the property | The name remained in brand-owned editorial content | Live room inventory or current operation |
| October 2025 | Vijesti reports more than five years closed and a proposed March reopening | Closure persisted; a reopening intention existed | That ownership or reopening was completed |
| August 2026 | Old hotel URL redirected to Marriott, whose destination page denied automated access; local page says closed indefinitely; no authoritative reopening found | Travelers still need direct verification | A definitive legal conclusion about ownership or future plans |
| Evidence type | Confidence level |
|---|---|
| Old article, cached OTA page or search result | Lowest |
| Current social post or directory label | Low |
| Direct phone/email confirmation | Higher |

The 2017 room count does not reconcile
The original collaboration says the hotel had 72 chalet-style rooms and 15 larger suites. A 2017 academic table lists 69 rooms and apartments. Other legacy listings use 72 as a total. The categories may have been counted differently, or the inventory may have changed, but the source set does not explain the mismatch.

This is more than a trivia problem. Room count affects group capacity, revenue assumptions and comparison with new developments. A current operating hotel should be able to state keys, room categories and out-of-service inventory consistently across its brand page and reservation system. When old sources disagree, do not convert a larger promotional number into a present fact.
The same rule applies to amenities. The collaboration described branded beds, two food-and-beverage concepts, a hammam, sauna, whirlpool, treatment rooms, fitness center, ski room and children's playroom. Those descriptions are historical. Equipment can be removed, rooms can be repurposed and services can remain closed even when a building reopens.

How stale hotel content keeps looking current
Hotel pages age badly because several systems separate after closure. An editorial article can remain indexed. An affiliate can retain descriptive copy and old photographs. A destination page can add a closure warning without removing the sentence beneath it that says “open year-round.” An activities marketplace can preserve a property name even when it sells tours rather than rooms. Search engines then assemble those fragments into the appearance of consensus.

Brand-owned content can also drift. Marriott's October 2024 travel article called Four Points one of the best places to stay in the town, despite the later independent account saying the hotel had been closed since 2020. The residual activities page looks official at first glance but carries a disclaimer separating its tours from Marriott International. A traveler who sees only the logo could miss the distinction.
Montenegro.com contributed to the same problem by leaving this collaboration and a legacy property record online. Correcting the article means preserving its historical evidence while withdrawing the operating claim. A responsible marketplace should distinguish three states: confirmed bookable, temporarily unavailable with operator confirmation, and status unverified. “Search partner returned a page” is not a fourth state.
The four-season promise was bigger than one hotel
The phrase “for all seasons” was not invented solely for Four Points. It expresses a regional development strategy: reduce dependence on winter snow by combining skiing with hiking, cycling, rural tourism, wellness, meetings and access to protected landscapes. The Government's Bjelasica–Komovi–Prokletije cluster description explicitly links ski and rural tourism with trail networks, cultural routes, higher-standard hotels and local agriculture.
That strategy has real infrastructure behind it. When Kolašin 1600 opened in 2019, the Government reported a six-seat lift, 1,567 metres long, with a 2,600-skier hourly capacity and two pistes totaling 4.5 kilometres at that stage. A 2026 season-coordination report said about 10,000 ski tickets and 2,000 panoramic-ride tickets had been sold at Kolašin 1600 by the reporting date. Those figures document use of the mountain center, not demand for any specific hotel.

For present trip planning, separate the destination from the former hotel. The complete Kolašin guide covers the town and mountain centers. The Montenegro winter guide addresses seasonal ski decisions, while the argument for visiting northern Montenegro beyond the coastal crowds explains shoulder-season potential without attaching it to one property.
Summer demand also needs a concrete product. A hotel spa cannot by itself make an all-season destination. Guests need maintained trails, transport, guides, wet-weather alternatives and clear park rules. The Montenegro hiking guide and the Biogradsko Jezero guide are better evidence of what a non-ski stay can contain.
A separate branded project shows why dates need labels
Crowne Plaza Kolašin is a different project and should not be confused with the former Four Points building. It is useful here only as a timeline comparison. In October 2024, IHG said the 93-room Crowne Plaza was due to open in the second half of 2025. The developer's current page describes 105 rooms and says both that completion or opening is targeted for Q4 2026 and that operational launch is planned for 2027. Those statements are internally inconsistent, so neither date should be treated as proof of opening; no live room inventory was confirmed.
Those changes do not prove failure. Development schedules move, design counts change and brand openings require construction, staffing, systems and approvals to align. They do prove why pipeline language must remain conditional. “Due to open,” “target completion” and “accepting reservations” are different facts. A travel article should update each stage rather than leaving the earliest promise as a permanent date.

Practical information: booking verification before you pay
For any hotel with a closure, conversion or delayed-opening history, complete the following checks in order. Do not rely on screenshots or a search result date.
- Find the current official property page from the brand's main hotel directory. A blog, activities marketplace or press release is not a reservation record.
- Search a specific near-term date for at least two nights. A working calendar with named room types and rate rules is stronger than a generic “check availability” button that redirects elsewhere.
- Match the legal or operating name, address and telephone number. A familiar building can reopen under a different operator. Do not assume an old loyalty program, cancellation policy or status benefit survives.
- Request written confirmation directly. Ask whether the hotel is currently hosting guests, which facilities are operating, whether construction continues and who will charge the card.
- Use a payment method with dispute protection. Avoid bank transfer to an unverifiable party. Read whether the merchant of record is the hotel, brand, agency or marketplace.
- Verify again shortly before travel. Mountain openings can be affected by works, staffing and seasonal operations. Save the confirmation and cancellation terms.
If the property cannot answer those questions, choose a confirmed alternative. A lower rate does not compensate for arriving at a closed building. For families, also verify connecting rooms, child access to spa areas and transport rather than assuming an old playroom photograph establishes current provision.
Frequently asked questions
Is Four Points by Sheraton Kolašin open?
This audit could not confirm that it is. Independent reporting said the hotel had been closed since May 2020, and a current local page labels it closed indefinitely. A proposed reopening was reported but not verified as completed by 27 August 2026.
Why does it still appear on Marriott-branded pages?
One 2024 editorial article retained the recommendation, and a Marriott-branded activities marketplace retains the property name. The activities page states that its products are third-party provided. Neither is equivalent to live hotel inventory in the brand reservation system.
Can I rely on an online travel agency showing the hotel?
No single listing is sufficient. Some agencies preserve cached descriptions long after supply changes. Confirm that a specific dated room is returned, identify the merchant of record and obtain direct written confirmation from the current operator.
Are the rooms and spa shown here still present?
The photographs came from the 2017 promotional collaboration. They are historical images only. This article makes no claim about the building's current interior, equipment, maintenance or services.
Does the closure mean Kolašin is not a four-season destination?
No. The destination has separate ski infrastructure, trails, protected landscapes, rural tourism and new hotel development. The operational history of one building should not be confused with the town's broader offer.
Methodology and references
The audit compared the inherited 2017 collaboration with government announcements, an academic hotel-chain study, brand editorial and pipeline pages, a local destination status page and independent reporting. It tested whether the old hotel domain and standard brand property route produced authoritative current inventory. No field visit, operator call or completed booking was claimed. The strongest unresolved question is whether the reported post-sale reopening ever occurred.
