Ilinica

A hill rising above Igalo, in the Herceg Novi municipality at the western edge of the Bay of Kotor. Long overlooked even by locals, it is a quietly significant historical site with sweeping views over Igalo, Herceg Novi and the mouth of the bay.

An old church and a monument tied to the area's French past, set among Mediterranean greenery. The combination of a small historic site and a wide viewpoint is what makes the climb worth making.

A manageable walk rather than a serious climb, winding up through olive groves and scrub to the chapel and viewpoint, where the whole sweep of the outer bay opens out beneath you. Allow a couple of hours at an unhurried pace.

Proper shoes and water. There is no shade for parts of the ascent and no facilities on the hill, so go prepared, and choose the softer light of morning or late afternoon rather than the middle of the day.

Herceg Novi's old town climbs in stone steps past the Forte Mare and Kanli Kula fortresses, the Clock Tower and Belavista Square, and the Savina monastery sits among cypresses above the sea. Igalo is known for the mud and mineral spa at the Institute Dr Simo Milosevic.

Yes. From the Herceg Novi waterfront and marina, boats run out to the Mamula island fortress, the Blue Cave and the Lustica beaches of Zanjice and Mirista. Keen walkers can press on to the trails of the Orjen massif behind the town.
