The Kamenari–Lepetane ferry is a route choice, not a guaranteed shortcut. It crosses the narrow Verige passage between the Herceg Novi and Tivat sides of Boka. In light traffic, that can avoid a long drive around the inner bay. In a vehicle queue, the total calculation changes: access, waiting, loading, the crossing and the road after disembarkation all count.

As of 31 August 2026, the operator’s summer plan says ferries run every 15–20 minutes continuously, day and night, through 14 October. Standard passenger cars are listed at €5 in season and €4 off-season, while pedestrians and bicycles are free. These are dated official details, not permanent promises. The operator is Montenegro’s state-owned Public Company for Management of Maritime Assets. Its website is the right starting point for the current timetable, price list and online store. Search results, old screenshots and inherited travel copy are not substitutes.

The live summer schedule—and its limit

The official schedule page states that the summer plan applies from 4 May to 14 October 2026, with departures every 15–20 minutes through the entire day and night. Its detailed table shows repeated scheduled movements from each terminal. The practical takeaway is frequency, not a need to target one minute as though this were an intercity train.

The same page still displays a winter pattern dated 15 October 2025 to 3 May 2026: 20-minute service from 06:00 to midnight, then hourly departures from Kamenari on the hour and Lepetane at half past. That period has already ended. Do not project it onto winter 2026–27. Travelling on or after 15 October 2026 requires a fresh check for the new plan.

Prices: classify the vehicle before paying

The official PDF lists the standard passenger-car rate at €5 in season and €4 off-season. Motorcycles are €2.50 and €1.50 respectively. Passenger vans are listed at €7.50; vehicles with trailers and several larger categories have their own rates. Do not force a camper, minibus, tall van, trailer or commercial vehicle into the small-car category because the silhouette looks close.

The operator’s price page lists pedestrians, cyclists and people with disabilities as free, alongside specified emergency and public-service vehicles. It also advertises a €3 car rate for residents of Herceg Novi and Tivat in both seasonal periods. That is a resident concession, not the general tourist fare. Be ready to show whatever eligibility evidence the operator requires.

Prices can change. The purchase terms explicitly say the ticket is charged at the price displayed in the web shop at purchase, with VAT included, and that the operator may alter the price list. For a budget, use today’s official category; for a decision months away, treat today’s number as provisional.

Online tickets: useful, but not a queue-jump promise

The official terms say the buyer selects a date and vehicle category, pays online with Visa or Mastercard and receives an email containing the ticket and QR code. The code can be printed or shown on a phone. Check the email before joining the terminal approach, raise screen brightness, and keep the ticket available without handling the phone while driving.

The terms do not say that an online purchase gives priority boarding or reserves capacity on a named departure. This guide therefore promises neither. A ticket solves the payment step; it does not make the physical queue disappear.

Queue strategy for drivers

Approach with the ticket or payment method ready, stay in the signed lane, leave junctions and entrances clear, and follow staff signals. Do not overtake the queue or create a second line from a shoulder. Build a time margin around any flight, tour, border appointment or check-in. A frequent service reduces scheduled spacing, but it cannot remove demand peaks, incidents, weather decisions or a missed loading cycle.

Compare the observed queue with live road traffic around the bay. The ferry often suits travel between the Herceg Novi side and Tivat or the coast beyond. Do not reduce the decision to the crossing time. A ferry schedule’s arrival columns may imply about 15 minutes for a planned movement, but they do not include your queue, loading or the road afterward. Nor should an article claim a fixed kilometre saving: the comparison changes with the actual origin and destination.

Pedestrians, cyclists and accessibility

The official price information lists pedestrians and cyclists as free. Free does not automatically mean effortless: terminal traffic, ramps, moving vehicles, weather and the connection after disembarkation still matter. Cyclists should dismount where instructed, remain visible and avoid weaving between queued vehicles. Pedestrians should use marked waiting and boarding areas and follow crew directions.

The operator also lists people with disabilities as free, but its public price text does not describe every ramp gradient, accessible toilet, boarding assistance or onward pavement. Contact the operator before travel if a specific accommodation is essential. State the mobility device, vehicle dimensions and assistance required rather than asking only whether the service is “accessible.”

Kamenari beyond the terminal

Kamenari is a settlement, not just a ramp. Herceg Novi municipality places it about 15 kilometres east of the city and connects its name with stonecutters and the red stone of Đurići. It describes Verige as roughly 350 metres wide, the narrowest passage in the bay. The story that an iron chain once protected the inner bay is explicitly presented by the municipality as tradition; it should not be promoted into settled engineering history.

Do not collect stone from quarries, spoil heaps, walls or shore property as a souvenir. Material that looks discarded can be private, regulated or culturally significant. The inherited article’s invitation to take a piece has been removed.

A short stop should never block ferry circulation or a resident’s access. Use a clearly lawful parking place, keep quay edges and working areas free, and treat churches and cemeteries respectfully. Boka is often marketed as a fjord. Peer-reviewed geomorphology describes it as a ria system: a drowned river landscape rather than a glacial valley. UNESCO calls it a natural harbour and protects a defined 14,600-hectare inner south-eastern property. This matters for route choices.
