Virpazar is a village of stone houses and old bridges at the edge of Skadar Lake, roughly an hour from both Podgorica and the coast, and the main gateway to Skadar Lake National Park. The Crmnica river meets the lake here, and the whole settlement is built around water: two bridges, a small harbour lined with boats, and reedbeds beginning where the last houses end. It is small enough to walk across in five minutes and busy enough in summer to feel like a proper crossroads.

Virpazar,13 July 1941: guerrilla detachments from Godinje, Seoca, Boljevići, Krnjice and Virpazar attacked the Italian garrison in the village and took it after a short fight — six Italian soldiers killed, 15 wounded, 50 captured. A town command was set up the same day.
The coast —by the end of that first day the shore from Miločer to Sutomore was in insurgent hands. The uprising took the Cetinje and Bar districts first and spread the next day to Podgorica, Danilovgrad, Nikšić and Kolašin.
The lake,16 July: insurgents had seized several small boats at Virpazar. They sent one down to Scutari carrying 46 captured Italian soldiers, and traded them for medical supplies and food.
After —the July uprising was suppressed within six weeks and cost some 5,000 Montenegrin lives. 13 July is now Statehood Day, marking both this and the Congress of Berlin of 1878; in Virpazar it is marked by Mirko Ostoja’s Monument to the Revolution.

Virpazar is a small village at the head of Skadar Lake and the main gateway to the national park. It sits where the Crmnica river meets the lake, about 35 km from Podgorica, and is where most boat trips onto the water begin.
What is there to do in Virpazar?
Take a boat out onto Skadar Lake, climb to the Besac fortress above the village for the view over the wetlands, eat lake fish in the village restaurants, and use it as the base for the Crmnica wine villages just inland.
How long are the Skadar Lake boat trips?
Two hours is the standard, taking in the lily fields, the bird colonies and usually one of the islet monasteries or the Grmozur fortress. Longer half-day trips go further out. Spring has the best birdlife and the flowering lilies; by late summer low water can limit the routes.
How do you get to Virpazar?
About 30 minutes by car from Podgorica, or 40 from Bar. The Podgorica-Bar railway stops here, which makes the lake an easy day trip without a car — but check return times, as evening services thin out.
When is the best time to visit Skadar Lake?
Late spring is the pick: the water lilies flower, the migratory birds are in, and the heat has not yet arrived. Autumn is good for wine and quiet. Midsummer is hot and hazy over the water, and winter brings high water and few open restaurants.
Is Virpazar a good place to stay?
For a night or two, yes, if you want the lake on your doorstep and an early boat. It is a village rather than a resort, with guesthouses rather than hotels, and most visitors come as a day trip from Podgorica or the coast.

Ukljeva is the small bleak of Lake Skadar, and Virpazar names a whole December festival after it and the wine. The wine is Vranac — Montenegro’s own red grape and its most planted one, which until the Second World War grew almost nowhere but Crmnica before it spread across the country.

Virpazar peaked at 412 residents in 1981. It counted 337 in 2003, 277 in 2011 and 235 in 2023 — 120 men and 115 women, and barely more than the 223 the first postwar census found in 1948. The village that sells the tickets into a national park has lost two out of every five residents since 1981.
