Art in the area of Montenegro dates back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by the archeological findings of prehistoric man's drawings in Lipci, near Risno, in the 8th century BC. The drawings depict a stag hunt and the rising sun sign, as well as other symbols. The second discovered drawing is located in Prokletije in the north of Montenegro, it was made on a stone slab and represents a primitive man and a wolf.
Crvena stijena in Petrovići - is located about 50 km from Nikšić and is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe. Remains from the Middle Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Ages were found in this area and are of great importance because they bear witness to the beginnings of life not only in this part of Montenegro but also on the planet.
For years, domestic and foreign expeditions have been visiting this rare and globally important site. More than 26,000 objects from the period of prehistoric man's life have been excavated. Numerous objects were found that were used for everyday use, procurement and preparation of food, but also objects that were not utilitarian. Items such as stone crafts, snails and shells as well as ceramic dishes.
Numerous medieval fortresses in Montenegro represent art in themselves. The Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles in construction, stone sculpture, and painting are recognizable. Throughout history, fortresses had a military, manorial function or existed as city fortifications. They are built of stone, and are characterized by ramparts and towers. These fascinating buildings were built in numerous coastal cities where the influence of the Illyrians, Romans, Austro-Hungarians, Turks, and Spaniards was dominant: Bar, Ulcinj, Herceg-Novi, Budva, Kotor, Risno, Perast, but also in the north of Montenegro, Rijeka Crnojevica, Podgorica, the Skadar Lake area.
National Museum in Cetinje - includes: Museum of King Nikola, Museum of Peter II Petrović Njegoš, Njegoš's birthplace, Njegoš's mausoleum on Lovćen, Vladika Danilo's mausoleum on Orlovo krš, Art Museum with the Dado Đurić Gallery of Contemporary Art, Ethnographic Museum and the newly founded Archaeological Museum with the Lapidarium.
In the National Museum, you can see collections of weapons, decorations, flags, plaques, coats of arms, seals, photographs, archaeological, numismatic, artistic, ethnographic and applied art collections. Residences, chapels in honor and glory of the worldly and spiritual ruler, poet and philosopher Petar II Petrovic Njegoš. During the 1970s, the Art Museum of Montenegro was called the Art Gallery. It houses about 3,000 exhibits, among which are the most important works of contemporary Yugoslav and Montenegrin fine art.
