The Đurđevića Tara Bridge carries the road across the Tara River Canyon at a height of 172 metres. Built between 1937 and 1940 to a design by the engineer Mijat Trojanović, this elegant concrete arch bridge stretches 365 metres on five spans, the largest of them 116 metres across - at the time the biggest vehicular concrete arch in Europe. Its proportions still look modern: a pale, spare line drawn over a gorge of dark forest and grey limestone.

A concrete arch bridge over the Tara canyon in northern Montenegro, completed in 1940. Its main span is about 116 m and the deck stands roughly 150 m above the river, which made it the largest vehicular concrete arch bridge in Europe when it opened.
Where is it?
On the road between Zabljak and Mojkovac, in the Durmitor area. It is about half an hour from Zabljak, two hours from Podgorica and a little under three from the coast, and it is hard to miss: the road crosses it.
What is its wartime story?
One of its engineers, Lazar Jaukovic, blew up the central arch in 1942 to stop the Italian advance, and was executed on the ruins of his own bridge. The arch was rebuilt after the war and a plaque by the roadside marks the story.
Can you zipline across the canyon?
Yes. Several operators run ziplines from near the bridge across the gorge, with the longest lines over a kilometre. They run through the summer season, and the drop below is the real attraction rather than the speed.
Is this where Tara rafting starts?
Most half-day trips put in downstream from the bridge, at Brstanovica, and the full run starts further up at Splaviste. Operators based here arrange transfers, so the bridge is where many rafting days begin and end.
Is it worth stopping for?
Yes, even briefly. Park at either end, walk out onto the deck and look down; the view runs the length of the canyon. There are cafes and stalls on both banks.
