Tomaševo

Tomaševo is a small village in inland Montenegro, spread over quiet hills away from the main tourist routes. The houses stand apart from one another along the slopes rather than clustered around a square, each with its own plot of land, and that pattern tells you most of what you need to know about how the place has always worked: this is farming country, and the village is the sum of its farms. Stone-built houses, some old and some rebuilt on old foundations, sit among meadows, plum and apple trees and stands of beech and oak. Fields are cut for hay in June and July, by hand or small tractor, and livestock still sets the daily rhythm, with sheep, a few cows and the occasional flock of goats. Home production remains normal rather than nostalgic: cheese, kajmak, smoked meat, plum rakija and jars of preserves put by for the winter. Inland winters are cold and snowy and the village turns inward; summers are green, warm and full of returning relatives. There is no tourist infrastructure here and nothing staged for visitors. What a traveller finds instead is landscape and hospitality: unmarked tracks that climb through woodland to open pasture, streams cold enough to keep a watermelon in, views that open unexpectedly between ridges, and the near-certainty of being invited in for coffee by anyone whose gate you happen to pass. The quiet after dark is total. Tomaševo suits travellers with a car and time to spare who want to see rural Montenegro as it is actually lived, or who are following family ties in the region. Come between late spring and early autumn, when the roads are clear and the hills are at their best. Bring what you need with you, because shopping, meals and fuel belong to the nearest town rather than the village.
